Background / General description
UNAIDS - the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS - brings together the efforts and resources of ten UN system organizations to the global AIDS response. The UNAIDS team in China takes a leading role in advocacy and resource mobilization efforts to fund and support national AIDS activities implemented by the various partners, including the provision of funds and technical support to assist initiatives by UN agencies.
UNAIDS initiated and guided the development of the UN Joint Programme on AIDS that reinforces and supports China’s national response to AIDS. It links directly with the National Health Commission and other stakeholders from ministries and agencies involved in AIDS response.
UNAIDS supports the UN Theme Group on AIDS in managing the joint programme, including the provision of advice on gaps and opportunities in implementation and reporting. In addition, in collaboration with other UN agencies, UNAIDS undertakes a wide range of activities in China, to achieve the following outcomes:

Decision-making for effective prevention, care and support, informed by reliable and credible data;

Policies and strategies developed and being operationalized for gay men and men who have sex with men (MSM), people who inject drugs (PWID), sex workers, and their sexual partners, prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT), and the next phase of treatment and care;

HIV and Human Rights dialogue influencing policy, legislation and strategy in priority areas;
-
Civil society participates in the national HIV response in a meaningful and sustained manner at national and sub-national levels;
-
Strengthen China’s role in the global AIDS response through promoting international and south-south cooperation
The UNAIDS team conducts advocacy and provides technical support to the various partners involved in the AIDS response and proactively facilitates the development of networks to enhance the contributions of partners at all levels. UNAIDS also supported South-South health collaboration, in particular between China-Africa.
Duties and Accountabilities
With the guidance of country director and under the supervision of the Policy and Strategy Adviser, Strategy and Information Adviser, Community Mobilization Adviser respectively and in a learning capacity, assist them to:
1. Policy and Strategy Intern:
-
Participating in discussions meetings, seminars and conferences with partners in the area of global health, South-South collaboration and China-Africa health collaboration, with a focus on access to medicines and health commodities that related to HIV;

Assisting in collecting, reviewing, analyzing, summarizing of information in related areas and disseminating them to national and international partners;
-
Prepare draft version of meeting summaries, reports, or presentations for discussion;
-
Communicating with implementation partners when necessary to follow up programmes;
-
Supporting to organize relative events and activities, and preforming any other tasks, as required, to ensure efficient facilitation of UNAIDS work priorities.
2. Strategic Information Intern:

Assist in Collecting, Reviewing, Analyzing, Summarizing and Disseminating information on national and provincial HIV epidemic situation, response, gaps and needs, and helping identify implications for the work of UNAIDS and collaboration with national partners

Supporting UNAIDS China Office’s work in supporting establishment and operation of China Fund for Civil Society Organization’s engagement in AIDS response, in particular in the areas of M&E;

Perform any other tasks, as required, to ensure efficient facilitation of UNAIDS work priorities.
3. Community Mobilization Intern:
-
Supporting advocacy campaigns and activities on promoting CBOs’ capabilities;
-
Assist in working closely with CBO partners which included but not limited to participating in advocacy activates and sharing key information through different opportunities;

Supporting advocacy campaign designing and implementation with other collaboration partners when necessary, including Zero Discrimination Day campaign and World AIDS Day campaign;

Participating and supporting other activities in the office.
Selection Criteria
-
Students that are currently registered in a university programme at a recognized post-secondary institution majored in public health, international relations, social science or development studies are welcome to apply;

Good knowledge or research experience on HIV prevention and global health;
-
Good analytical and summary skills;
-
Excellent office work and academic research software skills;
-
The ability to communicate ideas clearly and confidently with teamwork spirits;
-
Fluency in English (reading, writing and speaking) is essential to produce concise written and oral reports;
Eligibility
UNAIDS offers internship opportunities to students or recent graduates who:
-
Are enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate or postgraduate degree program at a recognized educational institution, or.
-
Have completed a course of study and have been awarded an undergraduate, graduate or postgraduate degree at a recognized educational institution; recent graduates must complete the internship within one year of graduation.

Are at least 20 years of age on the date of application.

Are not related to a staff member in UNAIDS (i.e. father, mother, brother, sister).

Have a working knowledge of at least one of the UN official languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish).
-
Hold a valid passport of a WHO Member State.
-
Available to work in UNAIDS China Office for maximum 6 months, 5-day full time per week.

Experience of internship is preferred.
Other Information

Medical Insurance: Interns are covered by a group insurance policy.
-
Interns are responsible for all arrangements, costs and fees associated with travel, visas and other such related expenses for the duration of the internship.

UNAIDS China will issue an attestation letter at the termination of duty based on supervisor’s performance evaluation.
