Love in the Sunshine in South Sichuan - 2018/6/29

The China children’s summer camp kicked off it’s annual activities this year in Liangshan, an autonomous prefecture in the south of the Chinese province of Sichuan. Sichuan is one of the largest provinces in China, it is also one of the most affected by HIV which is why this camp is so important. The camp brings together children who are living with HIV and runs under the theme “love in the sunshine”. At the camp the children are encouraged to participate in a wide range of activities in an environment they feel safe in, where they won’t be judged and where they will be respected by the other children and staff.

The advances in the response to HIV have been unprecedented. In South Africa in 2000, just 90 people had access to antiretroviral therapy. Today, South Africa has the largest treatment programme in the world, with 4.2 million people living with HIV in the country now on treatment. We have exceeded global targets and today around the world 20.9 million people have access to life-saving HIV medicines.

China–Africa partnership to improve access to health-care - 2017/5/24

China and Africa have come together to find new ways of improving access to health care. More than 30 Ministers of Health from across Africa joined the Vice-Premier of China Liu Yandong, and the Chinese Minister of National Health and Family Planning Commission Li Bin at the China-Africa Ministerial Conference on Health Cooperation. The event was held in Pretoria, South Africa on April 24 under the theme China-Africa Health Cooperation, From Commitments to Actions.

This year’s World AIDS Day’s theme, Hands Up for Prevention, reminds us that we still have work to do to reduce HIV transmission if we are to meet the global target set out in the UN Political Declaration on Ending AIDS adopted by the UN General Assembly in June 2016. In order to end AIDS by 2030, the HIV response must be fast tracked and that includes reducingnew HIV infections to less than 500,000 by 2020.
